A couple weeks ago Quimby and I noticed a new hole in a wall we pass by on our walks. It was stuffed with bark and a rock. Quimby's legs got all shaky as he inched closer and closer to check it out. I would have put my hand in to take out that rock to show him it was nothing to be scared of, but I didn't want to get in a tumble with whatever had taken over the hole. He checked the hole everyday for a while. Eventually all the stuffing was gone and now he doesn't look at it anymore. He is so silly.
I have to add that today I am so grateful for him, he may be a wimp sometimes and sensitive, but when it counts he is an excellent guard dog. He has a deep deep growl and bark and he isn't afraid to use them. I had a stranger knock on the door this morning - and normally I might not answer the door if I'm alone but I had the windows open so the guy could see that I was inside. Quimby was instantly growling. I always take this as a sign. I find it completely fascinating that he can tell the difference between a stranger and a delivery person. He bends over backwards to greet the postman, ups man, FedEx man. I just pulled up the shade to ask the man what he wanted. The guy was acting weird commenting on my "no solicitors" sign and how he was going to have to make himself one, he told me he was one of my neighbors from the apartments to my left and he needed some jumper cables. Luckily he took my no for an answer but I think Quimby barking and growling helped. He just looked suspicious. We are having a heat wave out here and he had on a leather coat and stocking cap. I hate to look at people with such a squinty eye, but our neighborhood has crime waves of break ins with people posing as terminators, and service men. I gave Quimby a big Thank You hug after the man left.
